Exercise Physiology

Exercise Physiology

To optimise your training and performance it is important to understand how the function and the structure of your body adapt to training. Through gaining an understanding of different physiological variables that underpin performance you can evaluate your strengths and weaknesses to develop an individualised training programme that is specific to you. Furthermore, the monitoring of physiological variables over time provides objective assessment of how effective your training has been. Together this allows you to maximise your training and optimise your performance.

Lactate Profile/ Max Test

A lactate profile depicts your heart rate and blood lactate response to incremental exercise, with the determination of two inflection or threshold points. This is important to endurance performance, as your first inflection point: lactate threshold, indicates the highest intensity at which aerobic metabolism can be maintained, while the second inflection point: lactate turn point, indicates the equilibrium between lactate production and lactate elimination. Endurance performance has been correlated with both of these points. Therefore, a lactate profile provides an effective way to prescribe individual training zones to optimise your performance, and track physiological changes over time.

Individual Monitoring

Monitoring the blood lactate response, heart rate, and/ or intensity of training sessions, after a lactate profile provides additional feedback on how you respond to specific training sessions. As this allows evaluation of training as it happens, specific monitoring can further individualise your training programme.

Individualised training programmes are available on request after commencing physiological support.
