What is Golfer’s Elbow?
Golfer’s elbow, formally known as medial epicondylitis, is a condition that causes pain and tenderness on the inside of the elbow. It is due to inflammation and microtearing in the tendons that attach to the medial epicondyle—the bony prominence on the inner side of your elbow. This condition commonly affects those who perform repetitive gripping, lifting, or wrist flexion movements (such as golfers, manual workers, racquet sport players, or even desk users), but you don’t need to play golf to develop golfer’s elbow.

How Do We Treat Golfer’s Elbow at Our Clinic?
At Elite Physical Medicine, you’ll receive a comprehensive and tailored approach from our expert physiotherapists:
Comprehensive Assessment: We undertake a full assessment to confirm diagnosis, rule out other causes of elbow or forearm pain, and understand your lifestyle or sporting requirements. A diagnostic ultrasound scan can also be performed by one of our Sonographers to give a clearer, more detailed assessment.
Education & Advice: Guidance is provided on posture, activity modification, and strategies to limit strain on the affected tendons—helping you manage pain and promote recovery.
Exercise Programme: Individualised rehabilitation including gentle, progressive strengthening and stretching exercises for the forearm, wrist, and hand. Focus is placed on rebuilding tendon strength and gradually regaining function.
Manual Therapy: Hands-on techniques such as soft tissue release, massage, and joint mobilisation may help relieve pain and improve movement.
Pain Management: Advice on using ice packs, rest, and over-the-counter pain relief when required.
Activity Modification: Practical recommendations to adapt your work, sport, or hobbies where necessary to promote healing and reduce recurrence.
Progressive Loading: Exercise intensity and volume is carefully increased as tendon symptoms settle, supporting a safe and confident return to normal activities.
Additional Treatment Options for Golfer’s Elbow
Referral for Further Investigation: Very rarely, if symptoms persist or diagnosis remains uncertain, further assessment such as imaging or review by a specialist may be arranged. Injection therapy or surgery is rarely indicated and considered only after thorough assessment.
