What is an MCL Rupture?
An MCL rupture is a tear of the medial collateral ligament—a strong band of tissue running along the inner side of the knee that helps stabilise the joint and prevents it from bending inwards. MCL injuries are often caused by a blow to the outside of the knee, sudden twisting movements, or sporting incidents. Ruptures can be partial (some fibres torn) or complete (ligament fully torn), and may occur alongside other knee injuries.

Typical Symptoms of an MCL Rupture
How Do We Treat MCL Ruptures at Our Clinic?
At Elite Physical Medicine, our physiotherapists provide thorough, evidence-based care for all grades of MCL injury:
Comprehensive Assessment: We carefully examine your knee to grade the severity of the rupture, identify any associated injuries (such as ACL or meniscus), and plan a safe, tailored recovery. A diagnostic ultrasound scan can also be performed by one of our Sonographers to give a clearer, more detailed assessment.
Education & Advice: You’ll receive practical guidance on activity modification, use of supports or bracing, safe weight-bearing, and rehabilitation timelines.
Exercise Programme: A structured rehab plan includes gentle mobility work, progressive strengthening for the quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes, and calf muscles, plus balance/proprioceptive exercises to restore stability and functional control.
Manual Therapy: Hands-on treatments may include joint mobilisation and massage to relieve pain and restore normal range of motion.
Pain Management: Advice on using ice after activity, rest, and over-the-counter pain relief to manage symptoms.
Activity Modification: Support for safe return to walking, work, sport, or exercise. Early protection and gradual loading are adjusted to severity, with guidance on use of a brace or crutches if needed.
Additional Treatment Options for an MCL Rupture
Referral for Imaging or Specialist Care: If your rupture is severe, involves other structures, or progress is slow, we may recommend further imaging (such as MRI) or review by an orthopaedic specialist. Surgery is rarely needed and only considered for major combined injuries or persistent instability.
