What is Morton’s Neuroma?

Morton’s neuroma is a painful condition affecting the ball of the foot, most commonly between the third and fourth toes. It occurs when the tissue around one of the nerves leading to the toes thickens or becomes irritated, causing compression and inflammation. This can result from repetitive pressure, wearing tight or high-heeled shoes, abnormal foot mechanics, or high-impact activities such as running. Although called a “neuroma”, it isn’t a true tumour but a benign thickening of nerve tissue.

Typical Symptoms of Morton’s Neuroma

  • Sharp, burning, or shooting pain in the ball of the foot, often between the third and fourth toes
  • Tingling, numbness, or a feeling of something “caught” under the foot
  • Symptoms may worsen with walking, wearing tight or narrow shoes, or standing for long periods
  • Relief often occurs with rest or removing footwear
  • Some people describe a sensation like “walking on a pebble”

How Do We Treat Morton’s Neuroma at Our Clinic?

At Elite Physical Medicine, our physiotherapists offer a comprehensive, evidence-based approach for managing Morton’s neuroma:

Comprehensive Assessment: We assess your symptoms, footwear choices, foot mechanics, and daily activities to confirm diagnosis and identify contributing factors. A diagnostic ultrasound scan can also be performed by one of our Sonographers to give a clearer, more detailed assessment.

Education & Advice: Advice is given regarding suitable footwear (wider toe boxes, cushioned soles), avoiding aggravating activities, and practical strategies to minimise nerve compression.

Exercise Programme: Targeted exercises to improve foot strength, flexibility, and biomechanics may help reduce pressure on the affected nerve and support long-term recovery.

Manual Therapy: Hands-on treatments, including soft tissue release and mobilisation, may be provided to ease discomfort and improve movement within the foot.

Pain Management: Guidance is offered on using ice packs, rest, and simple over-the-counter pain relief where necessary to control symptoms.

Activity Modification: Recommendations are made to help you adapt walking, sporting activities, or work routines during flare-ups, while maintaining overall fitness.

Additional Treatment Options for Morton’s Neuroma

Referral for Further Investigation: If pain is persistent or severe, we may refer you for imaging, specialist podiatry assessment, or review by a consultant. Advanced interventions, such as injection therapy or minor surgery, are considered only when conservative management is unsuccessful.
