At Elite, we aim to evaluate the physical readiness of players, identify areas for improvement, and prevent injuries by establishing a baseline of their current fitness levels. Cricket is a sport that demands a unique combination of endurance, power, agility, and precision, making a well-rounded strength assessment essential for optimal performance.

Dinath, a key seam bowler for the 1st XI at Dinton Cricket Club, has a history of back and shoulder issues. Recognising the importance of maintaining his health and performance, we at Elite conducted a comprehensive preseason assessment to ensure he possesses the necessary strength and capacity for the high-intensity, repetitive motions required of a fast bowler. Additionally, we focused on enhancing his shoulder strength, power, and stability to improve his fielding efficiency, especially when split-second fielding is crucial.

Extensive research on the biomechanics of the bowling action (or just watching Jofra Archer!) indicates that bowlers must cope with forces equivalent to 8-12 times their body weight impacting the whole chain from ankle to wrist upon ground contact. Without substantial training, such intense loading can lead to injuries, potentially sidelining players for entire seasons or even ending their careers. Our objective was to mitigate these risks by leveraging advanced assessment techniques and specialised equipment.

Using force decks, we collected data on ground reaction forces, power output, and movement asymmetries. These insights are vital for understanding power output and identifying movement asymmetries that could predispose Dinath to injury. Force plate testing has been instrumental at the professional level, offering significant strides in injury prevention and post-injury rehabilitation when returning to sport.

Hand-held dynamometer testing allowed us to measure isolated movement patterns, particularly shoulder external and internal rotation in this case. This is crucial for assessing shoulder strength and pinpointing specific areas of weakness or imbalance to tailor his training programme.

Based on the data from these tests, we developed a specialised exercise programme targeting Dinath’s identified imbalances and weak points. The programme focuses on core strength and stability, shoulder conditioning, and lower body strength. This proactive approach aims to reduce his injury risk and optimise his performance throughout the cricket season.

By understanding and addressing the specific physical demands of cricket, particularly for fast bowlers like Dinath, we at Elite are committed to helping players achieve their best performance while minimising the risk of injury. Our preseason strength assessments are just one of the many ways we strive to support athletes in reaching their peak potential.
